Germany increases imports from Chile by 11%

Between September and December 2023, Germany imported 2,532 prunes, a good third less than in the same period last year. Although shipments from France (+10% to 127 mt) and Uzbekistan (+292% to 102 mt) increased year-on-year, the volumes are too low to compensate for the decline in imports from countries such as Chile (-19% to 1,885 mt), the USA (-58% to 149 mt) and Serbia (-87% to 61 mt).

Overall, Germany imported 9,052 mt of prunes in 2023, around 13% less than in the previous year. Shipments from important growing countries such as the USA (-41% to 1,314 mt), Serbia (-44% to 519 mt) and France (-21% to 377 mt) declined. In contrast, imports from Chile (+11% to 5,404 mt), Turkey (+13% to 341 mt) and Uzbekistan (+12% to 223 mt) experienced growth.

Harvest preparations in Chile

In Chile, plum growers are preparing for the harvest. Under normal conditions, the first prune shipments from the 2024 crop should be able to take place in March/April. Thanks to sufficient availability, prices for Chilean prunes eased somewhat last season. Experts are currently reckoning that the crop will be similar to last year. It should be possible to provide more precise information in the coming weeks. There are also currently sufficient prunes available on the European spot market, report the experts at Catz. These are predominantly of medium size.
