Unexpected showers during harvest and the hailstorms at the beginning of July impacted yields in some regions. Lower projected output triggers prices’ climbing.

Rapeseed: different sentiments coming from different regions

SOFIA. During the past few days, rains fell over regions of the country where harvest is still underway. Anyhow, starting this Wednesday, agro-meteorological conditions will be favorable for the uninterrupted collection of what seems to be the remaining fields of rapeseed. The worst in weather surprises seems to have passed away! Yet, those farmers, whose fields were hit by the storms, collected lower yields – even lower than those of last year!

Yields vary from a region to region, starting from as low as 1.4 mt/ha in the central South and Southwest and reaching up to as much as 4.2 mt/ha in the Northeast of the country, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Unfavorable weather conditions during Winter and early Spring devastated mainly regions in the South while at the same time auspicious agro-meteorological conditions during Spring favored the growth of the crop in the North regions. A case in point, some farmers from the Northeast managed to collect a high quality crop, with an oil content of about 44.8%.

Prices seem to rise quickly

Output is expected to be lower this year, even before the recorded loss from the hailstorms in the beginning of the month, and as a result, the local market seems to tolerate higher prices. Prices are expected to be on the upper side at least until the end of the month.
