Sesame seeds: new crop increases pressure

NEW DELHI. Low demand will continue to put pressure on the Indian sesame seed market in the coming months. Meanwhile, Germany has significantly increased its imports from African origins this season.

200,000 mt from West Bengal

In addition to Gujarat, farmers in West Bengal are also sowing sesame seeds for the summer crop, with market players expecting the June/July crop to reach over 200,000 mt. A sesame seed crop of 40,000-50,000 mt is also expected in Andhra Pradesh, according to growers.

Meanwhile, demand is low and traders are bracing for prices not to firm up over the next two to three months. Hulled sesame seeds, 99.95% purity, are currently offered at a level of USD 2,365/mt CFR Hamburg.
