Butter: Aldi lifts prices by 30%

FRANKFURT/BRUSSELS. No, discount supermarket chain Aldi did not play an April Fools’ trick on Friday by announcing that consumers in Germany will have to pay 30% more for butter. Trouble is that prices for milk and dairy products are skyrocketing, which is not only driven by inflation in general but also by the war in Ukraine. EU feed and energy costs have surged by 15% in the past four weeks as DG Agri and DG Energy report.

Prices skyrocket

Not only is Ukraine an important feed supplier for dairy farmers in the EU but Russia also stopped exporting fertilizers after the sanctions kicked in. Russia is an important supplier for chemical fertilizers. Rising wholesale prices have now prompted Aldi to announced sharp price rises for milk, butter, cheese and meat as well as other products as of 04 April as the German Press Agency (dpa) and local media report. Other discounters and supermarkets including Lidl, Edeka and Rewe will certainly follow.
