Butter: climate and energy crisis spell disaster

FRANKFURT/BRUSSELS. Butter producers are growing increasingly worried over the continuing war in Ukraine, the energy crisis and the persistent drought in Europe.

Rough times ahead for EU dairy industry

According to the Butter and Cheese Exchange in Kempten demand for table butter is normal. The great unknown, however, is how consumers in Germany will react to rising prices as soon as the summer holiday season is over in September. Consumers are already turning to lower-priced alternatives and demand for margarine is up. Trading has revived for bulk butter as several buyers require stocks for autumn and winter. Problem, however, is that negotiations are difficult, and quotations have remained firm in Kempten at EUR 6.90-6.98/
