FRANKFURT/BRUSSELS. Prices in the international butter market are drifting further apart as the EU and Oceania scramble to keep up with highly competitive US prices. Prices throughout the EU member states also differ widely. Meanwhile, the cold spell in Germany with Arctic temperatures is having implications for the dairy market.

US butter is highly competitive

The European commission recently issued an average EU butter price of EUR 3.54/kg, which is 2% down on last year but 3.3% up on prices observed four weeks ago. Prices are most expensive in Slovakia (EUR 4.86/kg), the Czech Republic (4.38/kg) and Estonia (EUR 3.66/kg) and Germany (EUR 3.66/kg). In France (EUR 3.50/kg), Spain (EUR 3.50/kg) and Poland (EUR 3.41/kg) prices range below the EU average. The cheapest offers are available in Ireland (EUR 3.33/kg) and Italy (EUR 3.30/kg).
