WIESBADEN. The Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis) has announced the preliminary estimates for the 2018 crop. Due to the warm and dry weather in Spring the growers in Germany are reckoning with a crop of 61.100 mt. This more than doubles last year’s production.

Promising outlook for 2018

Current production estimates range at about 44,300 mt for sweet cherries and almost 16,800 mt for sour cherries. Due to adverse weather conditions last year’s production amounted to less than half of this amount. While the sweet cherry crop is expected to range 49% above the 10-year average, the sour cherry crop is expected to range 2% below this average. This is because the acreage for sour cherries has decreased to 1,900 ha (2017: 3,400 ha).
