Dates: buyers switch to cheaper varieties

TEHRAN. While exports proved a total disaster in April, May was not much better. Iran only shipped 8,625 mt of dates worth USD 6.450 million overseas last month, which is more than 50% down on April. A curious difference has occurred.

Traders put things into perspective

May exports have, in fact, declined by 54.2% in terms of volume and by as much as 60% in terms of value on the 18,966 mt of dates worth USD 16.275 million shipped overseas in April. Traders are, however, far from concerned. Issue is that Ramadan was celebrated in April, after which demand remained low. The yearly comparison is also a bit less shocking as exports only ranged 19.7% lower in terms of volume and 27.1% lower in terms of value on the 10,726 mt worth USD 8.857 shipped in in May 2021.
