REUS/CAIRO. At 140,000 mt, Egypt's date production in the 2021/22 season is a good 27% higher than last year. However, Saudi Arabia remains the undisputed number one.

Quality cannot meet expectations

Despite the crises in the health and economic sectors, global date production has increased by a good 11% compared to last year, according to the latest INC data, and amounts to around 1.11 million mt in the 2021/22 season. The undisputed leader remains Saudi Arabia with 220,000 mt, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, which are both expected to achieve production of 140,000 mt each. In Egypt, production would thus be more than 27% above that of the previous season. The large global grop is mainly due to the new plantations established in recent years. However, the INC also reports that quality is below expectations, mainly because the pandemic has left too few qualified workers available.

Early start of Ramadan poses difficulties

Exports are going satisfactorily so far, even if sellers are not happy with the prices achieved, as they have dropped significantly on the world market in recent months. The early start of Ramadan (2 April to 2 May 2022) is putting additional pressure on the market, especially for varieties that are harvested later, such as Deglet Noor. Ongoing transport problems and high freight costs are also likely to affect exports. In preparation for Ramadan, export prices have already increased and are currently at EUR 1.69/kg FOB Iran for premium grade Iranian Mazafati dates.
