Dates: shock over export ban

TEHRAN. Reports over an intended export ban for dates over Ramadan sent shockwaves through the market in Iran. Although exporters are emphasising that enough dates are available, there are other issues at stake.

Suppliers on edge

After news spread that the government intended to impose an export ban for dates over Ramadan, which ends on 20 April, activists fortunately succeeded in resolving the issue after intense talks. Pretext was that domestic supplies have to be protected. Suppliers, however, explain that Iran has frequently banned agricultural exports or imposed tariffs in a misguided bid to protect supplies and control prices in the past.
