OTTAWA/BRUSSELS. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has revised the estimates for the 2024/2025 mustard seed season. Competition is fierce and demand sluggish for suppliers in Canada. Ukraine may have upped its shipments to the EU by 29% but Russia still is the top supplier.

Fierce competition

As overseas demand remains sluggish trading activities are still rather limited in Canada. US buyers are not showing much interest and only few enquiries have been issued for yellow mustard seeds as Rayglen Commodities report. Competitors from Russia and Ukraine are also very active in Europe and Asia, which is limiting opportunities for suppliers in Canada.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has also revised the estimates for the 2024/2025 season. Although the area sown is still estimated 13% lower than last year at 225,000 ha and yields still range at 0.78 mt/ha, export estimates have been revised downwards by 8% to 110,000 mt. Contrary to this, domestic consumption should range around 30% higher at 42,000 mt than anticipated in the previous report. Carry-in supplies will compensate for the small downturn in production with total supplies estimated 11% higher than in the current marketing year and average prices are set to decline by 9% to CAD 1,275/mt.
