The lower output this year will support prices. Farmers expect by the end of September, the great majority of the crop to be shipped abroad.

SOFIA. The harvesting season is approaching its end, as the great majority of arable land has been already combined through. This season’s aggregate output is expected to be lower -- could be short by as much as 15% than that of last year (509,251 mt), -- because although farmers had planted more land than that of last year, much land fell through due to adverse weather conditions. Besides, hailstorms and heavy rains in the beginning of harvest devastated some fields.

Rapeseed: prospects for high exports

The good quality of the crop -- high oil content registered from harvests in the North regions -- and the forecasted lower national output this year are expected to support high prices. From all other locally grown crops, rapeseed is the crop that is quickest exported to foreign markets earlier in the marketing season. A case in point, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of September 2016, exports accounted close to 92% of national output 2016-17.

The great majority of exports go to countries of the EU union such as Belgium, Germany and France among others. Those local farmers whose oil content reaches as much as 44.8% are in no hurry to sell unless the price is convenient for them. They know buyers will come.
