Rapeseed: when predictions turn half right, the pain is high

SOFIA. Right before harvest, farmers boldly predicted two things would take place: output this year would be lower because of adverse weather conditions in regions throughout the country and prices would significantly increase as a result of that. Unfortunately, they happened to be right for only one of their predictions: the national output. On the price front, hopes have not yet waned though. However, Ukraine is reaching the end of harvest and regional market forces have always influenced local price sentiments.

One could not step in the same river twice

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 3rd of August 2017, farmers combined 97% of all available for harvest acreages in the country, as total collected quantities of rapeseed stood at 447,437 mt. Last year’s aggregate output reached 509,251 mt.

Although farmers planted area of about 186,927 ha to harvest during season 2017-18, approximately 24,766 ha fell through because of unfavorable weather conditions during the Winter and early Spring. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the majority of fallen through acreages were recorded in the fields of the regions of the central and the eastern South of Bulgaria while throughout the North regions, damage was less.

In addition, the yield so far in the year is estimated at 2.85 mt/ha while that of last year reached 2.96 mt/ha. Although the difference is minor, exactly such miniscule drops add the necessary pressure that quicker sink the ship.
