NEW DELHI. While the potential elimination of China as buyer of Indian sesame seeds resulted in lower prices just recently, some traders are trying to counteract the price decrease, more or less believably.

When China calls no more
At first, the word on the Indian sesame seed market yesterday was: Prices have gone up! Traders reported of good and hopefully continuing demand from Europe, but also from the local market. It turned out that the price increase was actually only minimal, various traders’ prices, however, are adjusting toward a common ground.
Exporters cannot really afford to raise their prices at the moment, since buying interest is not that strong, after all. Adding to that is the fact that the African sesame crop will also be available on the market in only a few months, which presents a strong competitor for exports to China.

More soon?
On a short-term basis, it will be interesting to see if Indian sesame seed traders at the SIAL will be able to successfully conclude some contracts. In the long run, the (lacking) demand from China is an important factor concerning price development.
