Sesame seeds: Dangerous mixes

NEW DELHI. By now, the Indian government has increased withdrawal limits per day for farmers and registered traders from 4,000 rupees to 10,000 rupees (55 euro/138 euro).

Trading is supposed to be maintained this way, after it had almost totally collapsed in the last few days. Actually, there are only very few who profit from this measure.

Many agricultural trading markets in India are closed, because even with 138 euro/day, respectively, 690 euro/week, traders are not making any great leaps, if a single tonne of sesame costs twice that.

Sudanese sesame seeds
The market has scarcely drawn an easy breath when around the bend comes the next bit of dreadful news: Red sesame seeds from Sudan. According to reports, there are suppliers who import the cheaper (allegedly of significantly lesser quality) red Sudanese sesame seeds (approx. 830 USD/mt CFR Hamburg) and then mix it with Indian produce in order to be able to offer lower prices. Apart from the fact that undeclared mixtures are generally not very popular, there are indeed traders who expect no qualitative impairment. As per their statement, Sudanese sesame seeds are several times better compared to those from Gujarat, for instance, so that even lesser qualities are acceptable when they are hulled.

Indian sesame seed prices differ considerably depending on the supplier. Hulled sesame seeds, 99.95% purity are at 1,300 – 1,320 USD/mt, and sesame seeds, natural, at 1,200 – 1,240 USD/mt CIF Hamburg.
