Walnuts: market takes odd turn in China

BRUSSELS/QINGDAO. Prices have taken a rather odd turn for walnuts in China. The country has also gained market shares in Europe this season.

Upsurge in EU imports from China

EU walnut imports have dipped by 9% to 59,444 mt this season so far as compared with 2022/2023. While shipments from the leading supplier USA have risen by a nominal 2%, imports from Chile have declined by 11%. Shipments from Ukraine have, by contrast, surged by 42%. Yet, the most noted increase has been observed in shipments from China, which range 67% higher than last year.

Germany is the main importing member state in the EU by far and accounted for 35% (10,080 mt) of all EU imports between 01 January and 23 March 2024. Sp
