Those farmers who harvested the crop before the recent hailstorms got lucky. In the regions where the storms hit, farmer will incur losses.

Rapeseed: some farmers already harvested the fields

SOFIA. The majority of farmers from the west and central regions of the North have already harvested their fields. In the Northeast, harvest started on the past weekend, since the crop’s moisture was high enough to allow harvesting to begin.

However, when rapeseed has been ripen enough to undergo harvest, it is quite susceptible to damage from meteorological factors. The recent hailstorms, heavily hitting parts of some regions in the country, have irreparably damaged the crop.

This year’s output is predicted to be lower because of fallen through cultivated areas due to adverse weather conditions during Winter and early Spring. However, the current hailstorms will weigh in favor of the lower output. Soon the sky will clear, for the loss to be estimated.

Regional competition matters

The strong international demand in recent years and the high prices are the key factors that influence the cultivation strategies of local farmers. The great majority of domestically produced rapeseed is quickly exported to foreign markets within a two-months period after harvest starts. Farmers will find market for their crop this year, but the question is at what price. Ukraine’s harvest has just started, and the country expects quite a strong output – according to a USDA report on agricultural production by 68% higher than that of last year. As a result, farmers expect local prices to take a dip. Anyhow, currently, rapeseed, harvest 2017-18 is sold at 0.340 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria.
